When we sold our meat to Sainsbury's, we realised that it would be mixed with beef from other animals. We want to sell Red Poll, Grass Fed Beef and we want it marketed as such. The big supermarkets just can't cope with the variety of little businesses, so here we are trying to go it alone.
Year of Launch - It takes nearly 3 years to produce a beef animal. First you buy your Mum, then you get her in calf, she's pregnant for nine months and the calf is suckled for six to eight months. As we do not finish our cattle on corn, just on grass, they need to be older than your average supermarket animal at nearly two and a half years old before becoming beef. Then the meat hangs for at least 3 weeks.
IMPORTANT MILE STONES:
Year 1970 - Cools Farm bought by Ken and Nancy Edwards.
Year 2003 to 2004 - Farmhouse refurbished.
Year 2007 - Farm taken back in hand by Quentin and Maggie Edwards. First Red Polls bought. Bed and Breakfast in the Farmhouse and self catering in The Old Piggery started.
Year 2008 - First beef beasts sold. Three to Sainsbury's, one to a local butcher and we started the website BoxBeef.com to sell directly to customers. We also started selling at Tisbury Country Market on the first and third Saturday of each month 10-11 am.
Year 2009 - From November onwards our cattle are mature enough to have at least one beast a month for beef. We are also providing organic pedigree breeding stock to other farmers wishing to add to their existing herd or start a new Red Poll Herd. We have been accepted into the Higher Level Scheme by Natural England.
Year 2012 - our herd won the Red Poll Herd Competition for the south and we were second nationally to the Queen's herd at Sandringham. We sent our bull Oberon to Sandringham in exchange for a young bull, Appleton Pericles.
Year 2014 - we now sell our Grass Fed Red Poll Beef in boxes locally and nationally and regularly attend markets in Shaftesbury, Sherborne, Sunday market in Bradford on Avon and Country Markets in Tisbury, Wilton, Gillingham and now Sturminster Newton. Contact us if you would like details of dates.
